For
the attention of undergraduates and M.A. students interested in postmodern
philosophy and literature
Phenomenology and
Existentialism
Dr. Louis N.
Sandowsky
Spring Semester 2003
A
lecture and seminar based examination of the philosophical and literary roots
of deconstruction in phenomenology and existentialism. The principal themes of
discourse are: the techniques of philosophical critique in the fields of
phenomenology and deconstruction,
intentionality and signification, the problem of the unconscious,
living-temporality, spatiality, self-relation as mediated through the Other,
memory, imagination, and passion. As well as being a historical survey
of phenomenological thought, it is also a workshop on how to do
phenomenology.
Writers include:
Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jean Paul Sartre,
Albert Camus, and Jacques Derrida
Important Note: Anyone who may be
anxious about signing up for this course (and having to produce their work) in
English may take this as a genuine opportunity to improve their skills in this
area – quite apart from the fact that very few of the course texts are actually
available in Hebrew translation. I will help you to edit your work. Lack of
proficiency in English writing skills will not preclude you from qualifying to
take any of my courses (believe me, they will improve), and it will not result
in lower grades. I am primarily interested in the quality of your ‘ideas.’
